How to Store Cigarillos and Wraps So They Don’t Dry Out
A dried-out cigarillo or leaf wrap cracks, burns fast and tastes harsh. The good news: keeping them fresh is easy once you know the basics. Here is how to store cigarillos and wraps so they stay soft.
1. Keep Them Sealed Until You Use Them
Most cigarillos and wraps come in foil pouches or sealed packs for a reason. Leave them sealed until you are ready, and only open what you plan to use. Some products even come with their own freshness pack. LooseLeaf Slugs, for example, are each sealed with a humidity pack.
2. Store Them Somewhere Cool and Dark
Heat and sunlight dry tobacco leaf out fast. Skip the car dashboard, the windowsill and the spot next to the heater. A drawer or cabinet at room temperature works well.
3. Use an Airtight Container
Once a pack is open, move what is left into an airtight container or a zip bag with the air pressed out. The less air that reaches the leaf, the longer it stays soft.
4. Watch the Humidity
Cigars and leaf are usually kept at around 65 to 70% relative humidity. If you keep a stash, a small humidor or a sealed container with a two-way humidity pack helps hold that range.
What Not to Do
- Do not put them in the fridge or freezer. Moisture and temperature swings can damage the leaf.
- Do not leave them in a hot car. Heat is the fastest way to dry out a wrap.
- Do not buy more than you will use in a few weeks unless you have a way to store it.
