Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? 7 Causes and How to Fix Them

  • Oct, 02, 2026

Few things ruin a vape faster than a dry, burnt hit. One second it’s fine, the next it tastes like a campfire. The good news: a burnt taste almost always comes down to the coil and the cotton inside it, and most of the causes are easy to fix. Here are the big seven.

Quick note: this is for refillable pod systems, tanks and mods. If a disposable tastes burnt, it’s usually out of juice and it’s time for a new one.

1. You Didn’t Prime a New Coil

A new coil comes with dry cotton. If you fire it before the cotton soaks up e-liquid, you burn the cotton, and that burnt taste doesn’t go away.

Fix: After installing a new coil or pod, drip a few drops of e-liquid onto the exposed cotton, fill it up, and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes before your first hit. Take a few gentle puffs without firing to help the juice soak in.

2. Your Wattage Is Too High

Every coil has a recommended wattage range, and it’s usually printed right on the coil. Going above it heats the coil faster than the cotton can re-soak.

Fix: Check the range on your coil and start at the low end, then work your way up until the flavor is right.

3. You’re Chain Vaping

Taking hit after hit without a break doesn’t give the cotton time to re-soak between puffs.

Fix: Give it a few seconds between hits. If you vape hard and often, a coil with a higher wattage range and more wicking can keep up better.

4. You’re Low on E-Liquid

When the juice level drops below the wicking holes, the cotton can’t pull in enough liquid.

Fix: Refill before your tank or pod runs low, and keep an eye on the level.

5. Your E-Liquid Is Too Thick for the Coil

High-VG e-liquid is thicker and wicks slower. Small pod coils can struggle to keep up with it.

Fix: In small pod systems, stick with nic salts or thinner blends. Save the thick, high-VG juice for sub-ohm tanks with bigger wicking holes.

6. Sweet Juice Gunked Up Your Coil

Very sweet flavors, like desserts and candies, can leave residue on the coil that cooks on over time. Flavor fades, then turns burnt.

Fix: Expect to change coils more often with sweet juices. There’s no real way to clean a coil back to new.

7. The Coil Is Just Worn Out

Every coil has a lifespan. If you’ve done everything right and the taste is still off, it’s time for a new one.

Fix: Swap in a fresh coil or pod, and prime it first.

When to Replace Your Coil

Signs your coil is done:

  • A burnt or harsh taste that doesn’t go away
  • Flavor that’s gone flat or muted
  • Less vapor than usual
  • Gurgling or leaking even when everything’s put together right

Burnt Vape FAQ

Why does my new coil taste burnt?

It usually wasn’t primed. The dry cotton burned on the first hit. Once the cotton burns, the coil needs to be replaced.

How long should I wait after filling a new coil?

Let it sit for about 5 to 10 minutes after priming and filling so the cotton fully soaks.

Can you fix a burnt coil?

Not really. Once the cotton is burnt, the taste stays. Replace the coil and prime the new one.

How often should I change my coil?

It depends on how much you vape and what you vape. Replace it when the flavor fades, turns burnt, or vapor drops off.

Why does my disposable taste burnt?

It’s usually out of e-liquid. When the juice runs out, the cotton dries and burns. That means it’s time for a new disposable.
