Herb Grinders 101: 2-Piece vs. 4-Piece and Why It Matters
A good herb grinder is one of those things you don’t think about until you use a bad one. If you’re shopping for one, the first question is usually 2 piece vs 4 piece grinder. Here’s what the pieces actually do, how materials compare, and which style fits the way you roll.
How a Herb Grinder Works
Every grinder has two sides lined with teeth. Load your herbs, put the lid on, twist a few times, and the teeth break everything down into an even grind. An even grind burns or heats more evenly and makes rolling a lot easier. Need papers to go with it? Our Rolling Papers Guide covers sizes, materials and cones.
2 Piece vs 4 Piece Grinder: What’s the Difference?
2-Piece Grinder
Just the lid and the grinding chamber. You grind and scoop straight from the teeth.
- Pros: small, simple, easy to clean, usually the cheapest option.
- Cons: no screen or storage, so you’ll scrape material out of the teeth by hand.
4-Piece Grinder
Four stacked sections: the lid, the grinding chamber, a collection chamber with a fine mesh screen, and a bottom catch chamber.
- Pros: ground material drops through into its own chamber, the screen sifts out the fine dust, and you get storage built in.
- Cons: a little bigger, a few more parts to clean.
There’s also a 3-piece in the middle: grinder plus collection chamber, but no screen or bottom catch.
What Is the Kief Catcher?
On a 4-piece grinder, the bottom chamber is the kief catcher. The mesh screen above it lets only the finest particles fall through, so over time a fine dust collects at the bottom. Some people save it; others just clean it out. Either way, it’s the main reason people step up from a 2-piece.
Grinder Materials: Aluminum, Zinc and Electric
- Aluminum: lightweight, durable and the most common. A solid everyday pick.
- Zinc alloy: heavier and usually more affordable. Good, but the teeth can wear faster on cheaper models.
- Electric: press a button and it does the work. Great for bigger batches or anyone with hand or wrist trouble.
Which One Should You Get?
- Want simple and pocket-sized? Go 2-piece.
- Want the screen, storage and kief catch? Go 4-piece.
- Grinding a lot, or just hate twisting? Go electric.

How to Clean a Grinder
Take it apart, knock out loose material, and brush the teeth and screen with a small dry brush. For sticky buildup, soak the metal parts (not electric ones) in isopropyl alcohol, rinse with warm water and let everything dry fully before putting it back together. Same idea as cleaning glass, which we cover in How to Clean a Glass Water Pipe.
